Starting Therapy

A first step, at your pace.

You don’t need a clear plan or the perfect words. Whether you’re ready to begin or just exploring, here’s what you can expect from reaching out to your first session.

Two women chat in a cozy coastal living room overlooking the ocean, with a coffee table, books, and tea.

From reaching out to settling in.

  • Let’s have a conversation.

A free 15-minute phone consultation gives you space to ask questions, share what brings you here, and see whether we’re a good fit. There’s no obligation to book a session afterward.

  • Make space for your first session.

We’ll find a time that works, confirm payment or insurance details, and send a few forms to complete before we meet. You’ll also receive everything you need to find the office or join online

  • Begin where you are.

Your first appointment gives us time to get to know you, talk about what you’re hoping for, and decide together where to start. You don’t need to prepare a speech or share everything at once.

What happens in the first session?

We’ll talk about what brought you here, what life looks like lately, and what you hope might change. I’ll ask questions to get to know you, and you’ll have space to ask about me and how I work.

There’s no expectation to tell your whole story. We can start with what feels most important today and leave room for the rest as we build trust.

You don’t have to share everything at once.

Two ways to meet.

In person
A quiet space to step away from the day and settle into the conversation. We’ll meet at the Common Ground office, with directions and arrival details sent before your first appointment.

Online
The same dedicated time, from a space that feels comfortable to you. You’ll receive a secure video link before your appointment. Bring a reliable internet connection and a private spot where you can speak freely.

We’ll decide together how often to meet and what you’d like to work toward. You might have a specific goal, or we may need a little time to figure out what feels most important.

As we go, we’ll check in about what’s helping, where you feel stuck, and whether our focus needs to shift. You’re welcome to ask questions or tell me when something doesn’t feel right.

Your feedback is part of the process.

Finding a rhythm that fits.

You can start with a conversation.

A free 15-minute consultation is a chance to ask questions, talk about what you’re looking for, and get a feel for working together.
